Antique items from Liberty Belle to be put up for bidding on Saturday

Vintage slot machines, antique arcade games, phonographs, brass cash registers and other items from the Liberty Belle Saloon and Museum are waiting at the Reno Sparks Convention Center for buyers expected at a Saturday auction. "Once these people have bid, all this stuff will never been in the same place once again," said Peter Sidlow, a partner in Victorian Casino Antiques. The company is selling the collection.

He said 500 to 1,000 people today probably will visit the 600 items amassed during 48 years by Marshall Fey, an owner of the Liberty Belle. The site was closed to provide parking west of convention center. Wagons that adorned its roof a month ago are in a gated section of the parking lot. Inside, the bar remains stocked. An obituary for the Liberty Belle is on the front door. "I never thought I'd be auctioning off all this stuff, but here it is," said Fey, whose grandfather, Edmund, invented the first three-reel slot machine in 1898 and called it the Liberty Bell.

In 1901, Edmund Fey created the first draw poker machine. Marshall Fey's father, Charles, has 21 patents on arcade machines. Fey donated 28 machines from his grandfather's collection to the Nevada State Museum and is keeping six from his father's collection.

"We've had three generations in coin machines, and now it's all coming to an end," Fey said. The Liberty Belle closed its bronze doors March 17. Marshall Fey and his brother, Frank, decided to close the Reno landmark when faced with costly repairs. Hundreds of vintage coin operated machine collectors and dealers have flocked to Reno from Chicago, New Jersey and Oklahoma, Sidlow said. "This is the best collection of original gambling machines put together in many years," said Alan Sax of Chicago.

Others said owning a piece of the Fey collection prompted their trip to the biggest little city. "It's an opportunity to own something from the Liberty Belle Fey collection, and nothing has ever been for sale," said Don Mangeles of Tulsa, Okla. Bob Levy, an antique slot machine dealer from New Jersey, said he expected the items to sell for above their normal price because they are from the Fey collection. "I know several people who have too much money who might want something from the Fey collection," Levy said.

"I expect world-record prices." Sidlow said the Fey family history would help stoke the bidding. "A lot of these things will be bought for the historical interest," Sidlow said. "They may not be in mint condition, but it isn't going to matter as much because they are part of the Fey collection." Some native Northern Nevadans are hoping to have a piece of a place with memories. Dave Furman, 68, of Reno, said he was one of the first customers at the Liberty Belle in 1958. "There are a lot of memories tied to a lot of these things," said Furman, who plans to bid Saturday.
